Here's one I did based off a black and white photo my Dad took of me and my brother Mike. I'm usually the most disgruntled looking one. My Dad used to be a sweet newspaper photographer. Lots of my early paintings and drawings were based on his awesome work!

This one is very significant because I began this one a long time ago when I considered myself a painter. Then I took a break and had an animation career. Seventeen years later I came back to it. I solved the problem I was having by changing the realistic deep red background into an abstract blueish background with designs drawn on it. Thank you John Singer Sergeant.

I guess I consider this painting ALMOST finished. There's a lot of characters so it takes longer than usual. And I'm learning that I don't like painting such tiny people with shaky hand. This one's a tribute to another of my fave bands - Sigur Ros from Iceland, a country that's supposed to have the greatest public educational system in the world.

Janeane Garofalo

Another one of my favorite people. Janeane Garofalo is the straight talking wiseass chick who always adds a certain attitude and truth to anything she's in. Some of my faves: "Reality Bites", "Mystery Men", "Big Trouble", and "The Matchmaker", not to mention her work on the classic Ben Stiller Show. One of the most articulate voices of my generation. I worked on a student film with her once and still see her in my dreams.

Sea Monsters

This is a large painting I made that was inspired by toy fish I used to get in cereal boxes. They used to have awesome toys in cereal when the price of oil/plastics was cheap. My dad said the toy was actually less expensive than the cereal it displaced. See if you can find all 12 different kinds (hint: there's a grey flying fish in the upper right corner).

That's why I chose this painting of Regina Spektor to be the first post on my new blog. To me, her music taps into a spirit that's both whimsical and deep, emotional and intellectual. When I paint, I aspire to do the same.
